Join St Matthew’s Orchestra and Choir on 20 & 21 July 2019

with Aljosa Skorja

We will work on Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, also known as the Paukenmesse and the weekend will be filled with music (and some hard work), culminating in an unforgettable evening performance, with professional orchestra and soloists.

Paukenmesse needs little to no introduction, as together with the Nelson Mass, it is one of the composer’s most frequently performed choral works.  As the name suggests, the setting is famous for its dramatic use of the timpani (‘pauken’ in German). The Latin text was set to music at Eisenstadt in August 1796, and first performed in Vienna in December of the same year.

Even though the Benedictus and Agnus Dei include several battle references, the work is considered to express an anti-war sentiment with its mostly lyrical and joyful music.

HOW MUCH?   The cost for the weekend workshop is £30 when paid at the time of booking online, or £32 on the day.  We are also offering a discounted rate of £10 for full-time students. Please contact us using your university or academic institution email address to take advantage of this offer (link below - under Still Need Help?) If you are familiar with the work and would prefer to come on Sunday only the cost would be £25 payable in advance. Please email us on the link below under Still Need Help? to arrange booking for Sunday only.

The weekend will consist of a full day of rehearsing on Saturday, followed by a half-day pre-concert rehearsal on Sunday and an unforgettable evening performance with professional orchestra and soloists. You will also receive a half price voucher for an audience ticket for family or friends.

The day will be led by Josh Aljosa Skorja, who is rapidly making a name for himself as one of the most exciting choral conductors in the north of England. Josh studied musicology in his native Slovenia, and conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He is Director of Music at St Matthew’s Church, Chapel Allerton and leads the Pontefract Choral Society and Halifax Chamber Choir.

The event will conclude with a concert at 6.00 pm on Sunday 21 July 2019 with St Matthew's Orchestra and talented soloists from Rocket Opera.
