Join St Matthew’s Orchestra and Choir  at one of their famous weekend workshops on 29 & 30 September 2018.

We will work on Brahms' German Requiem and the weekend will be filled with music (and some hard work), culminating in an unforgettable evening performance, with professional orchestra and soloists.

Brahms' German Requiem is a large-scale work for chorus, orchestra and soloists and is sacred but non-liturgical, and, as its title states, is a Requiem in the German language.

However, Brahms, himself, stated that he would have happily called it a Human Requiem because of its focus on comforting the living.  The Requiem Mass in the Roman Catholic liturgy begins with prayers for the dead but Brahms’ German Requiem focuses on the living, beginning with the text from the Beatitudes, "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted."   This theme—transition from anxiety to comfort—persists throughout the work.

The wealth of emotion and drama in the music make this a powerful and uplifting piece for singers, players and audience.

HOW MUCH?   The cost for the weekend workshop is £25 if paid for at the time of booking online or £27 on-the-day.   This includes music hire (a £5 refundable deposit will be required), full day of rehearsing, half-day pre-concert rehearsal, an unforgettable evening performance with professional orchestra and soloists, and a half price voucher for audience ticket(s) for family or friends.

The day will be led by Josh Aljosa Skorja, who is rapidly making a name for himself as one of the most exciting choral conductors in the North of England. Josh studied musicology in his native Slovenia and conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He is Director of Music at St Matthew’s Church, Chapel Allerton and leads the Pontefract Choral Society and York Cantores Chamber Choir.  The event will conclude with a concert at 7.30 pm on Sunday 30 September 2018 with a first half  performance of Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World", by St Matthew's Orchestra and a second half performance of Brahms' A German Requiem, featuring the workshop choir,  St Matthew's Orchestra and talented soloists from Rocket Opera.
