FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 16 May 2018
Chapel Allerton, Leeds: St Matthew’s Orchestra and Choir are inviting applications for their come and sing weekend, taking place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July, at St Matthew’s Church in Chapel Allerton (LS7 3QF), working on Haydn’s Harmoniemesse. Interested singers are invited to visit their website for more information or, to apply for a place.
Attendees will spend Saturday, 21st July getting to know Haydn’s work, from initial ‘note-bashing’ in the morning, to adding phrasing, story, and communication in the afternoon. Throughout the day, singers will get the chance to learn more about the work, and develop their choral singing technique.
On Sunday, 22nd July, an afternoon rehearsal will lead to an evening performance with St Matthew’s Orchestra, and soloists from Rocket Opera.
The day will be lead by Josh Skorja, the Music Director of St Matthew’s Orchestra and Choir.
After completing his postgraduate conducting course at the Royal Northern College of Music, Josh is quickly making a name for himself as one of Northern England’s most exciting choral conductors. He is the Music Director of York Cantores chamber choir, and Pontefract Choral Society, and has worked with orchestras from Manchester Camerata in the UK, to RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra and Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra in his native Slovenia.
Josh says, ‘The weekend is aimed at singers with some choral singing experience and an ability to navigate a vocal score.’ However, he adds, ‘these are not essential: the hosts will make sure less-confident singers get plenty of support!’
Both the rehearsals and the concert will be at St Matthew’s Church, a grade II* listed building, with one of the finest acoustics in North Leeds. The church used to be a hidden gem in the heart of Chapel Allerton; however, the secret is almost out, as groups like the West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, The Péti Consort and Leeds Guild of Singers regularly choose it as their preferred concert venue.
St. Matthew’s Orchestra is a new and exciting per-service orchestra, based in Leeds.
A main aim of the orchestra is to give recent music graduates and students the opportunity to undertake professional, paid engagements and not force them to gain experience pro-bono.
They also attract more experienced players, and highly skilled amateurs, making their music making honest, committed and of the highest quality.
The orchestra supports the work of St Matthew’s Choir, Chapel Allerton, which hosts regular Come & Sing weekends, and the work of the Pontefract Choral Society. The orchestra is also available to hire.
